- A Malaysian company's financial figures come from the financial statements it lodges with SSM, the Companies Commission of Malaysia; SAFEDATA-SSM (safedata-ssm.com) sells SSM's documents online.
- Three single-company SSM documents carry those figures: the Company Profile, the Financial Comparison (2, 3, 5 or 10 years side by side) and the Financial Historical Comparison (two years, based on a year the customer selects).
- They are SSM's key figures, not the full audited statements: SSM's samples show revenue, profit before and after tax and balance sheet items, with no notes to the accounts and no auditors' report.
- The rules give a private company about seven months after its year end to circulate its financial statements and lodge them with SSM, so the latest year may not be on SSM yet.
- SSM's fee for a Financial Comparison is RM10 for each year compared, so a year of figures costs RM11.62 in a 2-year comparison and RM10.32 in a 10-year one.
Where does a Malaysian company's financial information come from?
A Malaysian company's financial information comes from the financial statements it lodges with SSM, the Companies Commission of Malaysia (Suruhanjaya Syarikat Malaysia). SSM says all registered and existing companies must lodge an annual submission under the Companies Act 2016: a private company lodges its financial statements within 30 days of circulating them to its members, and a public company within 30 days of its annual general meeting.
SSM delivers company information online through portals run by service providers it appoints. SAFEDATA-SSM is one: Safeguards KioskMedia (M) Sdn. Bhd., which publishes this guide, was appointed by SSM "as its Technology and Service Provider for the SAFEDATA-SSM Services", and SAFEDATA-SSM's FAQ says its documents are sourced directly from SSM. The SAFEDATA-SSM guide lists every document it sells.
Safeguards KioskMedia describes SAFEDATA-SSM's users as entrepreneurs checking partners, SMEs doing due diligence, company secretaries and accountants, and organisations that need business information in their workflows.
Which SSM documents carry a company's financial figures?
Three single-company SSM documents sold on SAFEDATA-SSM carry a company's financial figures. The Company Profile includes financial information alongside the company's details. The Financial Comparison sets figures from the company's audited financial statements side by side over 2, 3, 5 or 10 years. The Financial Historical Comparison compares two years, based on a year the customer selects.
"A comparative information on the audited financial statements of a company. Comparisons can be made for 2 years, 3 years, 5 years and 10 years."
| Document | What it covers | Years | Copy |
|---|---|---|---|
| Company Profile | Company details, share capital, directors/officers, shareholders, charges and financial information | One, in SSM's sample | Non-CTC or CTC |
| Financial Comparison | Figures from the audited financial statements, year by year | 2, 3, 5 or 10 | Non-CTC |
| Financial Historical Comparison | Two years of audited financial statement information | 2, from a year the customer selects | Non-CTC or CTC |
These are SSM's key figures from the statements, not the full audited statements: SSM's samples of the reports carry no notes to the accounts and no auditors' report.
For many companies at once, SSM's Company Listing Package C is "a list of companies including company's basic information and company financial statement information", supplied in bulk in Excel format through SSM's service provider portals, SAFEDATA-SSM among them. Organisations that need SSM data inside their own systems can start with corporate solutions.
Can you get financial figures for a business registered under ROB?
Not from SSM's Business Profile, its record of a business registered under the Registration of Businesses Act 1956 (ROB): SSM's description of it lists registration details, status, address, branches and owners, and no financial information. The documents in this guide are for companies such as a Sdn Bhd or a Berhad; the company profile vs business profile comparison sets the two records side by side.
What does an SSM financial report show?
An SSM financial report shows the key figures from a company's lodged financial statements, one column for each financial year, newest first in SSM's sample. SSM's sample Financial Comparison opens with the Registrar's disclaimer and the company's corporate information, then a Key Financial Information page: the auditor, the financial year end, balance sheet items and income statement items.
SSM's sample Financial Comparison also states "This information are from the company's document registered as at" a date. SSM's sample Company Profile carries the same items for one financial year, on a page headed Ringkasan Penyata Kewangan (summary of financial statements), after its pages on directors, shareholders and charges. To look into the people behind the company, read how to find the directors and shareholders of a Malaysian company.

How much does a company's financial information cost?
On SAFEDATA-SSM, a Financial Comparison costs RM23.24 for 2 years, RM33.24 for 3, RM53.24 for 5 and RM103.24 for 10 years; a Financial Historical Comparison costs RM23.24, or RM33.24 as a certified true copy (CTC); a Company Profile costs RM13.24, or RM23.24 as a CTC. Each listed price is SSM's own fee plus RM3.24: SAFEDATA-SSM's RM3.00 service fee and 8% SST on that fee.
| Document | SSM's fee | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Financial Comparison, 2 years | RM20 | RM23.24 |
| Financial Comparison, 3 years | RM30 | RM33.24 |
| Financial Comparison, 5 years | RM50 | RM53.24 |

The CTC vs non-CTC guide explains when the certified copy is worth the extra. Buy a company's financial documents on SAFEDATA-SSM.
Which period should you choose?
Choose by the company's age and the years you need. A company has no financial statements for years before it was incorporated, so check the incorporation date on its Company Profile first. The rules give a private company about seven months after its year end to get its statements to SSM, so the latest year may not be there yet.
A longer Financial Comparison costs less per year of figures. SSM's fee is RM10 for each year compared and the RM3.24 is charged once per document, so a year of figures costs RM11.62 in a 2-year comparison and RM10.32 in a 10-year one.
When you want to choose the year a two-year comparison is based on, the Financial Historical Comparison is the document SSM describes as based on "the year selected by the customer".
Before paying for a 5- or 10-year span, check the Exempt Private Company line on the company's Company Profile and, if in doubt, ask SAFEDATA-SSM customer service on 010-207 9384. SSM's annual-submission fees cover a private company's "audited financial statements and reports", its "non-audited financial statements and reports" and a "Certificate relating to Exempt Private Company (EPC)", while SSM describes the Financial Comparison as drawn from audited financial statements. You can compare the Financial Comparison spans on its own page.
How current are a company's figures on SSM?
A company's figures on SSM are as recent as the last financial statements it lodged. SSM says a Sdn Bhd must circulate its financial statements within six months of its financial year end, and a private company lodges them within 30 days of circulating them: the rules give a private company about seven months after its year end to get its figures to SSM.
- Financial year endThe date at the head of each column of SSM's report.
- Within 6 monthsA Sdn Bhd circulates its financial statements to its members (Companies Act 2016, s.258(1)(a)).
- 30 days laterA private company lodges them with SSM.
- About 7 monthsWhere these deadlines end: the year's figures can be on SSM.
Each column of SSM's report gives the financial year end and the date of tabling, so you can see when that year's accounts were tabled: in SSM's sample Financial Comparison, the year ended 31-12-2018 has a date of tabling of 28-06-2019.
Does SAFEDATA-SSM tell you whether a company is financially sound?
No. SAFEDATA-SSM gives access to SSM's records of a company, sourced directly from SSM; it does not rate companies or give advice. What a revenue line or a loss means for your deal is for you, or your accountant, to judge from the figures and, where you need the detail, the company's full statements.
SSM's report gives the reader its own lines to start from: for each year, Unqualified Reports (Y/N) and Consolidated Accounts (Y/N), beside the auditor's name.

Frequently asked questions
Is it free to get a company's financial information in Malaysia?
Not from SSM's records. Signing up on SAFEDATA-SSM is free, but each SSM document is paid. The lowest-priced SAFEDATA-SSM document that carries a company's financial information is the Company Profile, at RM13.24; a Financial Comparison of two years costs RM23.24.
Can I see a company's revenue and profit on SSM?
Yes, as SSM's key figures. SSM's sample financial report lists revenue, profit or loss before tax and profit or loss after tax for each financial year, beside balance sheet items such as current assets and current liabilities. In SSM's sample the Company Profile carries one year; a Financial Comparison sets 2, 3, 5 or 10 years side by side.
Do I need a certified true copy (CTC) of a company's financial report?
Only if whoever receives it asks for a certified copy. On SAFEDATA-SSM the Company Profile and the Financial Historical Comparison come as a CTC, and the CTC costs RM10 more than the plain copy, which is SSM's own fee for the digital certified true copy. The Financial Comparison is sold as a non-CTC copy.
Does the financial report show who the company's directors are?
SSM's sample Financial Comparison names the auditor, not the directors. The Company Profile lists the company's directors/officers and shareholders as well as its financial information, and SSM's Particulars of Directors/Officers covers the current directors and officers and the previous ones for the last 15 years.
