- A company's registration is checked against the records of SSM, the Companies Commission of Malaysia; SSM's current report on a company, the Company Profile, costs from RM13.24 on SAFEDATA-SSM (safedata-ssm.com).
- Companies (Sdn Bhd, Berhad) have a Company Profile, businesses and enterprises registered under ROB have a Business Profile, and limited liability partnerships (LLPs) have LLP documents.
- Since 11 October 2019 SSM has used a 12-digit registration number; in the law firm Donovan & Ho's reading, its fifth and sixth digits give the entity type: 01 for a local company, 03 for a business.
- On the Company Profile, the name and the 12-digit number should match what the company gave you, and the status should read "existing", the status SSM requires for its Attestation of Company Good Standing.
- SSM's Attestation of Company Good Standing, RM103.24 on SAFEDATA-SSM, is SSM's own confirmation that a company exists and has met the statutory requirements of the Companies Act 2016.
Where do you check if a company is registered in Malaysia?
To check or verify a company in Malaysia, you look it up in the records of the Companies Commission of Malaysia (Suruhanjaya Syarikat Malaysia, SSM), which registers companies and businesses and keeps their records. SSM delivers that information online through portals run by service providers it appoints. SAFEDATA-SSM is such a portal: Safeguards KioskMedia (M) Sdn. Bhd. runs it, and you buy SSM's documents on it at safedata-ssm.com.
"a portal provided by service provider (SP) appointed by SSM to deliver company and business information or products for customers online."
Safeguards KioskMedia, which publishes this guide, says SSM appointed it "as its Technology and Service Provider for the SAFEDATA-SSM Services" (SAFEDATA-SSM, About Us). SAFEDATA-SSM's FAQ says the documents it sells are sourced directly from SSM. SAFEDATA-SSM gives access to SSM's records; it does not rate companies or give advice. The SAFEDATA-SSM guide lists its documents and their prices; read more about Safeguards KioskMedia.
Is it a company, a business or an LLP, and which SSM record do you need?
The SSM record you need depends on the entity. A company, such as a Sdn Bhd or a Berhad, comes under ROC, and SSM's record for it is the Company Profile. A business or enterprise, the smaller sole proprietorships and partnerships, comes under ROB (registration under the Registration of Businesses Act 1956), and its record is the Business Profile. A limited liability partnership (LLP) has its own LLP documents on SAFEDATA-SSM.
| If it is | Record |
|---|---|
| A company: a Sdn Bhd or a Berhad (ROC) | Company Profile |
| A business or enterprise: a sole proprietorship or a partnership (ROB) | Business Profile, which also shows the registration expiry date |
| A limited liability partnership (LLP) | A document from the LLP documents tab |
The SSM Business Profile page covers the ROB record, the company profile vs business profile comparison sets the two side by side, and the glossary explains ROC, ROB and CTC.
SSM's register holds about six businesses for every company. SAFEDATA-SSM's home page counter, read on 16 and 19 October 2026, showed:
- Companies registered with SSM
- 1,551,5861,546,581 local, 5,005 foreign
- Businesses registered with SSM
- 9,232,0497,736,505 sole proprietorships, 1,495,544 partnerships
How do you read a Malaysian company registration number?
A Malaysian registration number has 12 digits: SSM began using the format for companies, businesses and LLPs on 11 October 2019, and the law firm Donovan & Ho noted that existing entities would be given one too. In Donovan & Ho's reading, the first four digits are the year of registration, the next two the type of entity and the last six a running number.
Read with Donovan & Ho's key, SSM's own example, 201901000005 (1312525-A), breaks down like this, with the old number in brackets:
- 2019The year of registration.
- 01The entity type: a local company.
- 000005The running number.
SSM's sample Company Profile gives a company incorporated on 1 March 2011 the number 201101006232 (934369-T). Donovan & Ho list the entity codes in the fifth and sixth digits as:
- 01
- Local company
- 02
- Foreign company
- 03
- Business (registration of business)
- 04
- Local limited liability partnership
- 05
- Foreign limited liability partnership
- 06
- Limited liability partnership for professional practice
A firm that calls itself a Sdn Bhd should carry 01 in the fifth and sixth digits of its registration number; a 03 there belongs to a business registered under ROB.

What does an SSM Company Profile tell you about a company?
An SSM Company Profile is SSM's current report on a single company: its registration details and status, the people who run and own it, and its financial information. One document therefore answers both "is this company registered?" and "who is behind it?". SSM's sample profile also prints, at the top of each page, the date its information is as at.
"A current report that contains basic information of a company, (such as company name, company number, incorporation date, company type, company status, registered address, business address and nature of business), share capital, directors/officers, shareholders, charges (if any) and financial information."
Check the company name and number against the company's own paperwork first, then its status, incorporation date, registered address, nature of business, directors and shareholders.
What should the company status say?
SSM's sample Company Profile prints the status line as "Status: EXISTING", and for its Attestation of Company Good Standing SSM requires a status of "existing" and a company that is not being wound up, struck off or dissolved. A company status other than existing is a reason to ask questions before you deal.
A Business Profile shows the registration expiry date instead, and an expiry date that has passed is a red flag; the guide on how to renew a business registration in Malaysia covers renewal.
How do you get SSM to confirm a company is in good standing?
SSM confirms good standing with an Attestation of Company Good Standing (ACGS), "a document issued by SSM to confirm the existence of a company and that it has met the statutory requirements by the Companies Act 2016 (Act 777)". An ACGS costs RM103.24 on SAFEDATA-SSM. SSM's criteria for an ACGS are:
- The company was incorporated at least 18 months before the date of the ACGS.
- Its latest annual return and audited financial statements, or its latest Exempt Private Company certificate, are lodged.
- Its status is "existing", and it is not being wound up, struck off or dissolved.
- It is not dormant.
- It has a registered address.
- Neither the company nor its directors have an outstanding compound with SSM.
- Neither the company nor its directors have a pending prosecution case with SSM.
The SSM certificates and good-standing attestation page explains how to buy an ACGS.
How much does it cost to check a company in Malaysia?
On SAFEDATA-SSM a Company Profile costs RM13.24, or RM23.24 as a certified true copy (CTC). Each listed price is SSM's own fee plus RM3.24: the RM3.00 SAFEDATA-SSM service fee and 8% SST (service tax) on that fee. SSM's fee for a Company Profile is RM10, or RM20 with the digital CTC, so RM10 + RM3.24 = RM13.24.
The SSM documents for checking a company, at SAFEDATA-SSM's listed prices:
- Company Profile
- RM13.24RM23.24 as a CTC
- Particulars of Directors/Officers
- RM23.24RM33.24 as a CTC
- Particulars of Shareholders
- RM23.24RM33.24 as a CTC
- Attestation of Company Good Standing
- RM103.24SSM's fee RM100
For a Business Profile (ROB), SSM's fee is RM10, or RM15 with the digital CTC, and the RM3.00 service fee with 8% SST is added. SSM's digital CTCs are "digitally certified as true copy by POS Digicert Sdn Bhd"; the non-CTC is the plain copy at the lower price, and the CTC vs non-CTC guide sets the two side by side. Buy the Company Profile on SAFEDATA-SSM.
What if the details don't match or the company doesn't come up?
If the name and registration number on SSM's profile do not both match what the company gave you, or the company does not come up at all, you have not confirmed that it is registered. Ask the company for its legal name and its 12-digit SSM registration number, search again, and hold off paying or signing until SSM's record and the company's paperwork agree.
Signs to stop and ask:
- Name and number
- One matches and the other does not.
- Entity code
- A firm calling itself a Sdn Bhd has 03, the business code, in digits 5 and 6.
- Status
- A Company Profile status other than "existing", or a Business Profile expiry date that has passed.
How do you check an SSM QR code or document a company shows you?
Three SSM tools check what a company shows you: the SSM BizTrust QR code, read with SSM's MySSM app; the DCTC QR Code Reader and Web Checker for SSM's digitally certified true copy (DCTC) documents; and the QR code on an Attestation of Company Good Standing, which shows SSM's stored copy.
- SSM BizTrust QR code
- Scan with SSM's MySSM app: information such as the entity's name, registration number, status and business URL.
- Digitally certified true copy
- Check with SSM's DCTC QR Code Reader (mobile application) or its Web Checker on ssm4u.com.my.
- Attestation of Company Good Standing
- Scan its QR code to view SSM's stored copy.
What does an SSM BizTrust QR code show?
SSM describes the SSM BizTrust QR Code as "a business starter kit that serves as identification of digital identity to business entities". The check works only when the business shows you its code, and the Company Profile remains SSM's current report on the company.
How do you check that an SSM document someone sends you is real?
SSM's DCTC QR Code Reader is, in SSM's words, "a reader to verify and validate the authenticity of" SSM's DCTC documents by mobile application, and SSM's Web Checker does the same through ssm4u.com.my. For an Attestation of Company Good Standing, the QR code lets a print-out be checked against SSM's stored copy.
How do you see who runs and owns the company?
The Company Profile already lists the directors/officers and shareholders. For more detail, SAFEDATA-SSM sells two SSM documents, Particulars of Directors/Officers and Particulars of Shareholders, each RM23.24, or RM33.24 as a CTC, and Personal Involvement, which looks up what a person holds as a shareholder or director by MyKad number.
- Particulars of Directors/Officers: SSM says it covers the current directors and officers and previous ones for the last 15 years.
- Particulars of Shareholders: SSM says it gives the company's basic information and changes of shareholding.
- Personal Involvement: what a person holds as a shareholder or director, looked up by MyKad number.

Is it free to check if a company is registered in Malaysia?
Not for SSM's current report on a company. The Company Profile, which shows a company's registration details and status, costs from RM13.24 on SAFEDATA-SSM, where signing up as a user costs nothing. For a quick look, a business that displays an SSM BizTrust QR code can be scanned with SSM's MySSM app, which shows information such as its name, registration number and status.
Can I check a company with its registration number?
Yes. SAFEDATA-SSM's search takes a company's name or its registration number. Since 11 October 2019 SSM has used a 12-digit number for companies, businesses and LLPs; SSM's own example, 201901000005 (1312525-A), shows the old number in brackets. In the law firm Donovan & Ho's reading, the fifth and sixth digits give the entity type, such as 01 for a local company.
What is the difference between a Company Profile and a Business Profile?
A Company Profile is SSM's report on a company, such as a Sdn Bhd or Berhad, under ROC. A Business Profile is SSM's report on a business or enterprise under ROB, and it shows the registration expiry date and the current and previous owners. Is SAFEDATA-SSM an official source of SSM information?
SAFEDATA-SSM is a portal run by an SSM-appointed service provider: SSM appointed Safeguards KioskMedia (M) Sdn. Bhd. as its Technology and Service Provider for the SAFEDATA-SSM Services. SAFEDATA-SSM's FAQ says its documents are sourced directly from SSM, and SSM says the fee for each product on a service provider's portal is based on the fee schedule in the Companies Regulations 2017.
How long can I download a document after buying it?
A document bought on SAFEDATA-SSM can be downloaded within 7 days of the purchase date, from the My Purchase(s) menu. If customer service resupplies a corrected document, that one can be downloaded within 7 days of the resupply. Save a copy of the document once you have downloaded it, so you still have it after the 7 days.
