Which businesses renew their registration with SSM?

Business registration renewal is for sole proprietorships and partnerships registered under the Registration of Businesses Act 1956, which SSM's services call ROB (Registration of Businesses). Only the owner or a Person Responsible may apply, and SSM describes a Person Responsible as the representative of the business owner or partners. A company (Sdn Bhd or Berhad) is registered under ROC instead.

The renewal form is Form A1, the Application for Renewal of Business Registration. Under section 5A of the Registration of Businesses Act 1956, each renewal runs for no more than five years, and the new expiry date is stated on the certificate of registration. The company profile vs business profile comparison sets ROC and ROB side by side.

How much does it cost to renew an SSM business registration?

SSM charges RM60 a year to renew a sole proprietorship or partnership that uses a trade name, RM30 a year for a sole proprietorship that uses the owner's own name as on the identity card, and RM5 a year for each branch, for 1 to 5 years at a time. At a Tap.It kiosk, Safeguards KioskMedia adds a RM3 service fee per transaction.

Where can you renew an SSM business registration?

SSM's knowledge hub lists three places to apply for a business renewal: online on EzBiz, at a Tap.It kiosk ("Kiosk Tap.it at any SSM Office or selected stores"), and at selected Bank Simpanan Nasional (BSN) or Bank Kerjasama Rakyat (Bank Rakyat) branches. Which one fits depends on who is applying and whether you have an activated EzBiz Online account.

SSM's knowledge hub says selected BSN and Bank Rakyat branches; SSM's renewal poster says "All BSN branches" and "All BKRM branches". BSN's terms are on its business certificate renewal page.

"SSM has appointed Safeguards Kioskmedia (M) Sdn Bhd as business renewal agent via Kiosk Tap.It."

SSM, SSM4U Knowledge Hub

SSM's Business Renewal Platform page lists "Kiosk Tap.it Services" under business renewal and under EzBiz user activation, and both links go to Tap.It's list of locations with SSM services. The SSM services at Tap.It kiosks guide covers everything such a kiosk offers.

These steps follow SSM's EzBiz renewal guide (version 5.1, 24 May 2026, in Malay).

Do you need an EzBiz account first?

Yes: SSM's renewal guideline says applicants must be registered as an EzBiz Online user first. An EzBiz Online user must be a Malaysian citizen or permanent resident aged 18 or above, and activation only needs to be done once: in person at an SSM counter or a Tap.It kiosk, or online by uploading your MyKad, a selfie image and supporting documents, which SSM processes within 3 working days (SSM4U account activation). SSM4U activation at a Tap.It kiosk explains the kiosk route.

How do you renew a business registration at a Tap.It kiosk?

When should you renew a business registration?

Renew before the expiry date stated on your certificate of registration. The Registration of Businesses Act 1956 asks for the renewal application in the 30 days before expiry, and SSM's renewal guideline accepts a renewal at any time before expiry and up to 12 months after it. Carrying on the business after its registration has expired is an offence.

  1. 30 days before expiryThe Act asks for the renewal application from here (s.5A(1)).
  2. Expiry dateStated on the certificate. Trading after it is an offence (s.12(1)(b)).
  3. 12 months afterThe last point SSM's renewal guideline accepts a renewal.

"An application for the renewal of the registration of a business shall be made in the prescribed form and manner to the Registrar within thirty days before the date of expiry of the registration or the previous renewal."

What happens if you renew late?

Carrying on a business after its registration has expired is an offence under section 12(1)(b) of the Registration of Businesses Act 1956, with a fine of up to RM50,000, jail of up to two years, or both. A late renewal can also come with a compound: SSM's EzBiz guide says the compound amount on the renewal screen is the compound offered for renewing late under that section.

SSM's Business Renewal page adds that "Business renewal cannot be made for a business expired more than one (1) year." For the compound amount, or for a business expired more than a year, ask SSM's Contact Centre on 03-7721 4000 or at enquiry@ssm.com.my. Paying an SSM compound at a Tap.It kiosk explains the kiosk service.

What should you do after renewing a business registration?

After renewing, display the new certificate of registration. The Registration of Businesses Act 1956 requires the certificate to be kept in a conspicuous place at the principal place of business, and each branch's certificate at that branch. SSM's sheet for business owners says not displaying the certificate can bring a fine of up to RM2,000, jail of up to six months, or both.

How can you check when a business registration expires?

Your own business's expiry date is stated on its certificate of registration, under section 5A(5) of the Registration of Businesses Act 1956. SSM's Business Profile shows a business's registration expiry date too, with details such as its business name, registration number, registration date, business status and current and previous owners, so it is one way to check another business's registration.

The Business Profile can be bought on SAFEDATA-SSM at safedata-ssm.com, run by Safeguards KioskMedia as SSM's appointed Technology and Service Provider. SSM's fee is RM10, or RM15 as a digital certified true copy (CTC), plus SAFEDATA-SSM's RM3.00 service fee and 8% SST on that fee (SSM; SAFEDATA-SSM FAQ).

Frequently asked questions

Can I renew my business registration after it has expired?

Yes, for up to 12 months after the expiry date, according to SSM's renewal guideline; SSM's Business Renewal page says renewal cannot be made for a business expired more than one year. Carrying on the business after the registration has expired is still an offence under the Registration of Businesses Act 1956, and SSM's EzBiz guide says a compound may be offered for renewing late.

Can someone else renew my business registration for me?

Yes, if they are a Person Responsible, whom SSM describes as the representative of the business owner or partners. SSM's guideline says only the owner or a Person Responsible may apply for a renewal, and SSM lists three places for a Person Responsible: a Tap.It kiosk at any SSM office or selected stores, Bank Simpanan Nasional and Bank Kerjasama Rakyat.

Can I renew my business registration at an SSM office?

At a Tap.It kiosk, yes: SSM's knowledge hub lists "Kiosk Tap.it at any SSM Office or selected stores" as a place to renew. SSM's older Business Renewal page (last updated 12 March 2018) also lists the SSM counter, while its current Business Renewal Platform page lists SSM Counters under EzBiz user activation and Kiosk Tap.it Services under business renewal.

Is renewing at a Tap.It kiosk an official SSM channel?

Yes. SSM states that it "has appointed Safeguards Kioskmedia (M) Sdn Bhd as business renewal agent via Kiosk Tap.It", and SSM's Business Renewal Platform page links its "Kiosk Tap.it Services" to Tap.It's list of locations with SSM services.

What if I no longer run the business?

Then the business is terminated rather than renewed. SSM's sheet on the responsibilities of business owners asks for a Notification of Termination of Registered Business (Form C) within 30 days from the date the business stops operating, or within 4 months of the owner's death. Renewal, by contrast, is made with Form A1, the Application for Renewal of Business Registration.
